There will come a day when one of your trusted appliances finally calls it quits. It has spent its life making yours much easier. And while you’re actually thrilled to start shopping for a shiny new appliance, you have no answer to this important question: what do I do with my old, bulky appliance? Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered.
Small Household Appliances
Household appliances come in a variety of sizes and shapes. To dispose of nonworking smaller appliances, such as toasters, coffee makers, blenders or slow cookers, simply toss them in your bag or cart with your weekly trash service—it’s safe and won’t cost you additional money, as long as you’re still within your extra bag limit. If you’re interested in recycling these items, check to see if your municipality offers an e-recycling day. If the appliance is in good condition, think about donating it to a second-hand retailer.
Large Household Appliances
Large appliances include items like refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers and washer and dryer units. They are too large to fit in a bag or your Curby cart, and often contain materials not suitable for the landfill. We offer two options for large appliance disposal:
- Schedule a pickup at your home.* Follow a few steps to have your large appliance picked up for you. Start by completing this form. We’ll follow up to quote you a price, provide further instructions (such as removing doors from certain items) and collect payment. Some items can be collected on your normal trash day, but based on the size and type of the appliance, we may need to pick it up with a special truck on a different day. - Bring it to one of our Disposal Centers. We have three public Disposal Centers for you to self-haul trash, including appliances and other bulky items. If you’ve got the transportation, this option may save you a little cash. And just like with our pickup service, you may need to remove any doors from the appliance before we can accept it. Does my large appliance get recycled?
The answer is most of the time. If you use your own trailer and muscles to get it a Granger Disposal Center, it will definitely be recycled. With curbside collection, some appliances, such as microwaves, are picked up with your regular trash, so the truck goes directly to the landfill. The bigger appliances are taken to a local metal recycler, where any refrigerants are removed and the metal portions of the appliance are recycled.

Most newer appliances have energy-saving features and now that you know the metal from your appliance is recycled, the next time your appliance breaks on you—look on the green side!
